Basics
Short drama apps follow one simple model. Bite-size vertical episodes are what you watch. You get the first few for free. Later ones take coins or a pass. Most of the confusion begins with that split. These five answers are the place to start.
What exactly is a short drama app?
It is an app that plays vertical video made for phones. Every series arrives as many short episodes. Storylines tend to favor billionaires, revenge and hidden-identity reveals. Werewolf romances are well liked too. The leaders are ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax and My Drama. The format first appeared in China, under the name duanju.
How long does an episode last?
Most episodes last one to two minutes. Productions reelshort in the West often aim for 60 to 100 seconds. A series usually spans 20 to 100 episodes. For Married at First Sight, ReelShort lists 90. ReelShort’s hit Double Life series lists 60. In length, a full series can rival a movie.
Why do episodes end on cliffhangers?
Free episodes usually end at that point. ReelShort notes that the first 5 to 15 are usually free. 8 to 10 is the figure given in industry reporting. The paywall tends to land at peak tension. That timing is essentially the business model. It is at the same time one of the top complaints from viewers.
Who are the owners of ReelShort, DramaBox and My Drama?
The owner of ReelShort is Crazy Maple Studio based in Sunnyvale, California. China’s COL Group backs that studio. Running DramaBox is Singapore’s StoryMatrix, which is part of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. My Drama is a Holywater product, and Holywater was founded in Kyiv in 2020. October 2025 is when Fox Entertainment took an equity stake. ReelShort launched in 2022, DramaBox in 2023.
Is it possible to watch in a browser or on TV?
Yes, within limits. ReelShort’s website accepts Google, Facebook, Apple, TikTok and email logins. Progress syncs with the app. You can get free unlocks only in the app. My Drama has an Apple TV app. We came across no verified ReelShort TV app at all.
What It Costs
The most frequent questions are about money. The figures reflect US App Store prices as of September 2026. Prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Treat every number as a rough guide. Always start by looking at the pricing screen. This is what listings show.
Is ReelShort free to watch?
Partly, and the free portion is genuine. What people searching “is reel short free” or “is reel short app free” want is the catch. Opening episodes come free. It costs nothing to download. Later ones require coins or a VIP pass. You can earn free coins through ads and check-ins.
How do coins work?
Coins serve as the currency that unlocks episodes. ReelShort’s blog puts an episode at about 60 coins. Its smallest pack gives 500 coins for roughly $4.99. Bonus coins come with bigger packs. You earn 100+ coins from a 7-day check-in streak. One rewarded ad opens two episodes.
Do coins expire?
It varies by the app. According to ReelShort, free reward coins usually expire. The coins you paid for do not expire. My Drama takes a different approach. Its terms say coins are forfeited after 12 months of inactivity. Keep active and use reward coins first.
How much is a weekly pass?
Roughly $19.99 a week is the usual US price. You will see it listed by ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama. Some apps include cheaper plans. ShortMax shows a $9.99 tier, and GoodShort’s pricing starts around $5.99. All these passes renew automatically. Four weeks you forget about cost four times as much.
Can I get a monthly or yearly plan?
They exist on some apps. A yearly plan is listed on ReelShort’s blog at roughly $199.99. Its monthly price is not the same on every page. So that figure remains unconfirmed. DramaWave’s listing shows about $36.99 a month. In the US, ShortMax lists weekly passes only.
Can I watch without paying anything?
Yes, provided you are patient. Start by watching each series’ free first episodes. Rewarded ads unlock more. Don’t break your daily check-in streak. On top of that, ReelShort runs official YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion channels. All four combined go furthest.
Managing and Cancelling Subscriptions
A weekly pass renews until you stop it. Many people do not expect that. Cancelling is fast once you know where. Where to cancel comes down to how you paid. App stores cancel what was bought in them. The company handles purchases made on its website.
Does deleting the app cancel my subscription?
No, and plenty of people make this mistake. Deleting an app does not end its subscription, according to Apple. Google says the same of uninstalling. My Drama’s terms carry the same warning. Until you cancel, the pass renews. Cancel first, then delete.
How do I cancel on iPhone?
Open the Settings app first. Tap your name at the top of the screen. Select Subscriptions after that. Pick the drama app in the list. Tap Cancel and then confirm it. To be safe, act a day before renewal.
How can I cancel on Android?
Start by opening the Google Play Store app. Head to your Subscriptions list. There, pick the drama app. Tap Cancel and work through the prompts. Do not forget that uninstalling cancels nothing. To verify the change, recheck the list.
Can I cancel within the app?
Sometimes, though the store route is safer. In ShortMax’s terms, there is mention of an in-app option under About Subscription. They point store buyers to App Store or Google Play. Apple and Google only control what they charged for. Anyone who bought on the website should contact the company. Screenshot every cancellation.
Why did I get charged after a free trial?
Trial wording can be confusing. ShortMax’s “free trial” and “24 hours free” labels confused people, as its developer admits. According to its terms, passes renew 24 hours before expiry. The renewal is charged at the same price. Cancel a day before any trial ends. Then check the store shows it cancelled.
Getting Refunds
How refunds work depends on who took your money. Google handles Play charges. App Store charges are handled by Apple. Companies handle website charges. No route promises a refund. Each path is mapped in this table.
| Where you paid | Cancelling | Where to seek a refund | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone (App Store) | Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Cancel | The Report a Problem page from Apple | Removing the app does not cancel |
| Android (Google Play) | Google Play, Subscriptions, Cancel | Google in the first 48 hours, then the developer | Uninstalling alone does not cancel |
| Website | The app company’s account or support | The app company alone | Often non-refundable, per My Drama’s terms |
How do I request an Apple refund?
Head to Apple’s Report a Problem page. Use the billed Apple ID to sign in. Pick the charge and explain briefly. Within 24 to 48 hours, Apple usually replies. It is Apple that decides, not the app maker. Remember to cancel the pass too, or it will renew.
How do refunds from Google Play work?
Timing is what counts most here. Google says you may get a refund within 48 hours of purchase. Make the request directly through Google Play. When that window is over, contact the developer. For ReelShort, the path is Profile, then Feedback. If a renewal surprises you, act fast.
What about purchases made on a website?
Those purchases go through the app company. Apple and Google cannot help in that case. Web purchases are non-refundable except where law requires, My Drama’s terms say. Under its terms, EU and UK users have a 14-day withdrawal right. Other companies write their own rules. Before you pay online, check the terms.
Can I get a refund for unused coins?
Usually not, and the terms spell that out. My Drama’s terms treat coin purchases as final. ShortMax will not refund unless its own fault makes a product unusable. Store requests may help with accidental buys. Until a series hooks you, buy the smallest bundle. That way, mistakes cost less.
Safety and Copycat Apps
Here, name confusion is everywhere. Misspellings point to little-known unrelated apps. A few downloads are unsafe. Certain sites copy well-known brands. Your money is protected by using real names. These answers sort the real from the fake.
Is Real Short an actual app?
No, we could not find one. Real Short is a misspelled version of ReelShort. Other variants include “real short app”, “realshot”, “reel shot” and probably “shot shorts”. The correct name comes as a single word. On the App Store, its seller is New Leaf Publishing. Check that before you download.
What are ReelBox, DailyShort and GoldShort TV?
All three are small, unrelated apps. ReelBox, which people find via “reel box” or “reelbox tv”, has 50K+ Android installs. It is not linked to ReelShort or DramaBox. DailyShort, frequently typed “daily short”, counts 100K+ installs. GoldShort TV, an Android TV app, has 10K+ installs. GoodShort is probably what most searchers mean.
Is ShortTV the same as ShortMax?
Very likely, though unconfirmed. SHORTTV LIMITED in Hong Kong is ShortMax’s legal entity. Its website sends visitors on to ShortTV’s site. Both apps launched in September 2023. We could not find an official rename announcement. Unrelated apps also show up when you search “short tv” or “short max”.
Are mod APKs and coin generators safe?
No, and none of them is official. Mod APKs are altered copies of apps from outside official stores. One DramaBox look-alike labels its download as an unofficial modified version. Coin generators are not official either. There is no way for you to verify what they do. Only use official stores and websites.
Why is ReelShort rated low on Trustpilot?
From 250 reviews, ReelShort’s Trustpilot page shows 1.3 out of 5. Charges after cancelling are a recurring complaint. Weekly auto-renewals get mentioned often. Coin prices and denied refunds are mentioned by others. What any review site reflects is the people who chose to post. Read it as a list of things to check, not a final verdict.
